If it was at home...try those 'sound machines'. They offer a constant sound that drowns out everything. I didn't think I could sleep with one until I had to share a room with another mom on a trip. It was great. Of course, it might not be practical if camping. Yvette

In the book, Jacob doesn't tempt her with kids, or even her family. He just says he was the natural path her life would have taken, and it would have been effortless for them. And that Edward was like a drug for her, whereas he would have been like the sun. Healthier. And she says the worse part is that she's envisioned that life with him, and wants it quite badly.

Then, Edward has to come get Bella after she tells Jacob she's still choosing Edward, because she is crying so hard she had to pull her truck over and just lapse into something close to a catatonic state. Then she cries herself to sleep in Edwards arms. The next morning, he asks her if she's sure she made the right choice. She says she knows who she can't live without, and then quotes something sappy bit from Withering Heights. And then, later, she says something else that makes Edward question whether she's doing everything for everyone else instead of for herself - putting everyone else's wishes first. And just like in the movie, he says that she'd better not be just doing it all for him. Except in the book, the next line is "Everything my world was about him. What a silly thing to expect."

Re: Rabbits Are Queers (Selections) (April 16 and 18, 2010)

I didn't know that you played, good job on the performance

k.j

Re: I got a haircut.

love it! xoxo, yvette

Re: So, I got stopped by some cops for taking some pictures.

Well, like I said, it was cold, so I kept accidentally putting my hands in my pockets after he told me to keep my hands visible. According to this link, Illinois is a single-party notification state in practice, but two-party by law. I take this to mean that you are free under the law to covertly record conversations, including the police (search in the page for 'Illinois', there's good info)-

http://schwablearningforumarchive.greatschools....

Best thing to do is, contact your local ACLU branch, tell them what happened, and ask if you are permitted to record conversations with the police.

Another discussion of whether IL allows recording of cops-

http://ask.metafilter.com/53664/Can-I-record-po...

Next time you're out shooting anything that cops will find interesting, I suggest you enable your iPhone's screen-lock feature - do this prior to running the recorder app. Once you've started recording, turn off the display (or let it time out) and stick it in a thin outer pocket of your jacket or pants.

The screen lock will prevent the cops from illegally searching your phone. Cops are generally required, under current case law, to obtain a warrant or court order prior to searching the contents of a phone or computer.

Learn the laws around photography so you can stand up to police intimidation. There are some great sites focusing on the kind of encounter you experienced with the police. Photography Is Not a Crime (http://carlosmiller.com/) is a good jumping-off point, with links to many other sites.

Re: So, I got stopped by some cops for taking some pictures.

If your description of events is accurate, it sounds like the officer had no probable cause for any search.

Re: So, I got stopped by some cops for taking some pictures.

No, what the cops did was totally out of line.We posted on your story here.
I hadnt experienced it in her earlier writing, In life on the screen and second self she had seemed to consider the ways we might be shaped without being moralistic.
The ability to engage in conversations more than might have occurred in the past is congruent with what my research participants tell me, as i talk about in my blog on this subject
http://amusingspace.blogspot.c...

Re: Sherry Turkle’s Ethnocentric Stance on Texting

Hmmm...I see two avenues toward ethnocentrism here. Either she's trying to apply a basic developmental/psychological model (Erikson, psychoanalysis, bleh) to all people everywhere, or just to Americans... but doesn't bother to clarify that point. And we don't have enough information here to know which is the case.

Regarding adolescence as an important developmental time which is thwarted by constant texting, I wonder how this compares to kids with lots of siblings, sharing a small house space, and no privacy? Do they have the same "developmental issues"? Somehow I doubt it. She brings it up as a "move from 'I have a feeling, I want to send a text' to 'I want to have a feeling, I need to send a text.' - a constant need for validation. I can see why this would not be good. But what's the evidence that texting somehow causes this?

Not sure about the Korea example. Based on my very vague understanding of differences between Korea and America, I would say that this constant texting and connection will have a different impact here, and maybe even does "threaten" something that previously existed in our case more so than in theirs. A shift, but even in shifts something is being left behind. The question is whether to mourn that change. She does.

Excellent point about intimacy and difficult conversations, though. I concur.

In the end, she comes off sounding like the grumpy old man complaining about "kids these days" and how "society is going to hell in a handbasket," but I think part of that is the editing. She doesn't sound quite as bad in the interview.

And though I disagree with the following quote, I like it on aesthetic grounds and think they should have worked it into the article: "teens need stillness to develop their identities, but there's no stillness if you're vibrating 80 times a day."

Re: Status Updates for 2009-07-02

The Wire finishes out pretty strong through season 4 and 5, I don't know if I like season 3 or 4 the best.

Re: Aloïse Corbaz at the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art

I think her painting are a bit unusual to say the least.
